External Lighting Workshop - 2nd March 2009

With Spring approaching and the nights getting lighter iGuzzini descended on Southwark Cathedral to host the last external lighting workshop of the season.

57 people gathered round as Dominic Meyrick, Lighting Principal and Partner at Hoare Lea Lighting gave his opening talk discussing ‘Lighting Noise’ and the assessment of external lighting.

Having been truly inspired everyone was divided into 4 teams and allocated a façade of the Cathedral to light using any of the 100 external light fittings available along with leads cables and iGuzzini staff to assist.

The existing lighting scheme by Sutton Vane Associates was switched off and through a process of trial and error participants learnt about each of the fittings, what effect they could produce and how they may be able to use it in their lighting scheme.

After an hour of hard work each team decided on a spokesperson to describe their lighting scheme, why they did what they did and why they should win!

The judges then retired to discuss who should win whilst the participants enjoyed a well earned bowl of soup and crusty roll.

The four schemes all tackled their areas of the Cathedral in different ways, but the winners were Team 2 who did a superb job of connecting the architecture to the surrounding landscape using colour”
