Light Mapping NYC: a great success

Stop and look at the light: this incredible opportunity was offered by the LIGHT MAPPING event of New York City and by the six “walks” organized last November to discover the night identity of the Big Apple.

Directed by six special tour guides, light experts and curious people explored the city to read its various architectures:

Wayne Norbeck (Gluckman Mayner Architects) stimulated participants to look for darkness among the lights of Times Square;

Leni Schwendinger, Ute Besenecker (Light Projects Ltd.) and Brian McGrath (Urban Designer) made them discover the shades of the night around Old St Patrick’s Cathedral;

Julian Kline (Meatpacking District Initiative) led participants through the old and new architecture of the Meatpacking District;

Francis Milloy (Terreform) accompanies them through a transversal section of Manahattan, travelling along a time line through Midtown West;

Nathalie Rozot (Nathalie Rozot Planning & Design) explored the virtual night of Second Life with the avatars, bringing to light new ways of lighting;

Stephen Horner (Tillett Lighting Design) completed the journey with an external vision of Manhattan through the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO.

The last evening, the six tour guides presented the experiences collected during the night walks and with Glenn Shrum, coordinator of PLDA USA, as moderator highlighted the more and more important role played by the light in the relation between man and cities.

A great success for the event organized in close collaboration by the associations PLDA, IES NY, DLF NY with the support of our company throught iGuzzini Lighting North America.

After London and Rome, LIGHT MAPPING NY confirmed the great attention paid by iGuzzini to the many activities promoted by the Professional Lighting Design Association.

The photos and presentations of the event are available in the NEWS section of the PLDA site and a complete article on the event will be published in the next issue of the Professional Lighting Design magazine.
