Configuring Light moves to Brisbane

Configuring Light’s workshops

After London and Muscat, Configuring Light’s workshops move to the other side of the World.

Since 2015, iGuzzini has co-sponsored with the London School of Economics a biennial research programme called "Configuring Light/ Staging the Social". Organised in collaboration with King’s College and the Social Light Movement, the programme's main goal is to create a manual for Lighting Designers, in which lighting designs are not only a list of technical specifications (e.g. lighting levels, standard approvals), but projects based on social science methodologies too.

From December 13th to 16th Configuring Light project had an Australian edition too: the Queensland University of Technology hosted the London school of economics (LSE) researchers, supported by iGuzzini’s expertise in adding social science elements to technical lighting.

This full time workshop lasted 4 days, students had the possibility to take advantage of social research seminars, social research activities on site and design exercises with actual lighting equipment.

This will allow them to derive a significative, socio-logic conclusion of the urban context. This specific case regards Brisbane’s west end, a city suburb where population is expected to grow fourfold in the next 20 years. Seminar’s main theme was basically a question: “how do you imagine west end in the following 5 years?”

Taking into account light as an important element in spaces, positive or negative visions of the future are possible to forecast. In this workshop 3 main topics were analyzed:
-Development & Gentrification
-Diversity & Difference
-Public Spaces& mass culture

Results are immediately available on city’s territory and have been unveiled on December 16th on an actual meeting at QUT design lab, featuring professor Margaret Petty and Architect Peter Edwards, with the participation of Elettra Bordonaro founder of Light Follows Behaviour, Dr Joanne Entwistle, King’s College, London and Dr Don Slater from London School of Economics.
