Blueprint iGuzzini Architectural Photography Awards

Blueprint iGuzzini Architectural Photography Awards, the competition organized by iGuzzini in partnership with Blueprint magazine, is over and the two overall winners were announced on Friday, 22^nd September, during a special event held at designjunction, as part of the 2017 London Design Festival. 

Professional and amateur photographers have reinterpreted the concept of architecture entering their snaps in the four different categories: Architectural Narrative, Urbanism, Architecture & Time and Architecture & Light.

The professional winner, Simon Kennedy, and the amateur winner, Babak Eslahjou, received a money prize and an iGuzzini PizzaKobra lamp designed by the Israeli designer Ron Arad, respectively. 

“The right light is absolutely the most important element for the photographer of an architecture, and among the most important elements in architecture itself “commented Simon Kennedy, the English professional who won the competition with the photograph of a building in Berlin submitted in the Architecture and Time category of the competition. Kennedy explained that he chose this particular building because he was intrigued by the mix of modernist architecture and laboratory equipment. A “heroic optimist”, he stated the desire to preserve the distinctive traits of the original building over time given the gentrification tendencies of the surrounding area.

“Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms” is the quote by Le Corbusier that has always guided the philosophy of the other winner of the contest: Babak Eslahjou, principal at CORE Architects Studio based in Toronto, who designs buildings at work and takes pictures of them as a hobby. Architectural photographer for over 47 years, he defines photography as a unique relationship between light, shadow and colour. Babak entered the Urbanism category of the competition with a picture taken in Nazarè, Portugal, where the geometries of the city merge with the neatly organised fishing boats.
