A recognition for the IoT project at the Scrovegni Chapel
iGuzzini’s approach to innovation and the digital development undertaken by the company are excellent Made-In-Italy examples recognized by the
Premio Innovazione SMAU 2017
; this aims to enhance the role of disruptive thinkers in Italy. Following the round-table discussing “Industry 4.0 and IoT: data analysis aiming to improve production, monitoring and management of processes”, the prize was delivered at Fieramilanocity on Thursday, 26th October. The prestigious Premio SMAU was awarded to iGuzzini for the lighting project at the
Scrovegni Chapel in Padua
, a fruitful collaboration with WiSense, a startup from Marche Polytechnic University.
This new system is designed to improve both the visitor’s experience of Giotto’s priceless frescoes and the operation of the existing installation thanks to a groundbreaking application of smart lighting to art heritage. The new IoT lighting system is a “restoration of perception” project that involves integrating LED luminaires, environment sensors and internet protocol software. In an initial phase, sensors designed specifically for the Chapel will measure the variations in natural light. Then, once this data has been processed, a dynamic smart lighting system will be installed that will use a specific and highly advanced algorithm to adapt the artificial light to any changes in environmental conditions. This will benefit both the visual experience and the conservation of the paintings, as the artificial light will interact dynamically with the natural light and automatically adjust the colour temperature and intensity to constantly achieve values that offer the best possible viewing conditions. The installation of
Palco COB
and
Laser Blade
luminaires, with Tunable White technology, enables light tones to be adjusted dynamically as the intensity of natural light varies guarantying a better perception of the frescoes’ colours no matter what time of day it is. From the moment it is installed, this system will guarantee better colour rendering and energy savings of up to 60% compared to the previous one.
“We were honoured to receive the award as it reconfirms our commitment to investing in technological innovation, design and scientific research. Specifically, the lighting scheme designed for the Scrovegni Chapel demonstrates our active support for the Italian cultural heritage through the use of state-of-the-art lighting technologies"
commented
Massimiliano Guzzini
, Business Innovation & Networking Director at iGuzzini.
The new lighting scheme at the Scrovegni Chapel is part of a programme striving to enhance Padua’s cultural and architectural heritage as well as to improve the town’s energy efficiency. This initiative included the installation of new lighting systems at the Specola observatory and the Palazzo della Ragione, also local to the area.
