Today is the official opening of the 29th edition of the ATP Guzzini Challenger, the international tennis tournament on hard court that makes Recanati the Italian tennis capital until 24 July.
The Guzzini Challenger prepares players for the US hard court season, and is the only Italian Open on hard court, receiving 6,000 live spectators. This year, 22 of the 32 players are international (Belarus, Russia, Uzbekistan, Hungary, France, Ukraine, Spain, Belgium, Georgia, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia and Croatia), two of them standing in the first 84 places of the ATP ranking (Russian Evgeny Donskoy is ATP 78 and Ukrainian Illya Marchenko is ATP 84). The Italians, led by Luca Vanni, will have to work hard to uphold national pride.
The Challenger is organized by the Francesco Guzzini Tennis Club, named after the son of the club’s founder, Giannunzio Guzzini, who presided the club until his death in 2006. Since 2006 the club has been managed by Giannunzio’s brother, Adolfo Guzzini.
