The construction of the VIZIUM Centre for Science and Innovation in Ventspils began in 2019 and was completed in 2022. The mission of this centre is to attract the interest of young people, but not only, in STEM disciplines (acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
To make the centre alive and active, collaborations have been established with various institutes, both local, such as Ventspils University College, and international, such as the Vilvite Science Centre in Bergen, Norway. To gain experience from other science centres around the world, the Ventspils Science and Innovation Centre became a member of the Nordic Association of Science Centres (NSCF) and the European Network of Science Centres and Museums (Ecsite).
Vizium has interactive educational exhibition halls with 88 different exhibits, science shows, laboratories, lecture halls and creative technology workshops, which can be attended to learn more about physics, chemistry and other natural sciences.
The Centre was designed by Audrius Ambrasas architects as a union of landscape and architecture. The contours of the building and the hillside recall each other, and the new public spaces that have been created are designed for both residents and visitors to the city.
The lighting specialists from Gaimas Stil designed the interior (main areas and offices) and exterior lighting. iGuzzini luminaires were used for the outdoor. The Agorà projectors, installed in pairs on the ground, along the perimeter of the building, allow to see perfectly the continuous façade made with copper slats even at night, respecting their warm colour, which is particularly emphasised during the sunset.
Walky recessed, on the other hand, accompany visitors up to the roof top, which provides access to the public facilities such as the cafeteria, conference room and from which there is a splendid view of the landscape
