De-lighted by Expo 2020 Dubai

Shining a light

Every day, from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022, after sunset, the pavilions and all the spaces of the Expo wore their best evening dresses. Classy, sumptuous, elegant, minimal, artistic, creative, each one to enhance their own identity and launch messages of Opportunity, Sustainability, Mobility to the public all over the world.

The common denominator of this evening transformation was light, a factor on which iGuzzini played a decisive role. “Everywhere you went at the Expo, you were driven by light”, says Richard Holmes, ME Regional Director of iGuzzini. “Internally, externally, it was all light that made Expo as brilliant as it was. It was probably the greatest application lighting showroom that we have ever seen in our time”.

The Italian company, with the Dubai branch that manages the Middle East area, was in fact chosen to illuminate several pavilions (including UAE Pavillion, Alif-The Mobility Pavillion, Baden Wurttemberg Pavillion, Sweden Pavillion), common areas ( such as the Wasl Plaza Water Feature, Al Forsan Park, Jubilee Park, Plaza Park - Arrival Plaza, Shade Structures along the pathways between the Pavilions), in addition to the 86 permanent buildings of the Thematic District, dedicated to the guiding themes of Expo Dubai: opportunities, mobility and sustainability (more info).

Among the several testimonies of satisfaction with iGuzzini's work, we cite an example for the respective context of application.

Simon Fraser, Principal, Hopkins Architect, on how iGuzzini helped deliver the Shade Structures

“We chose iGuzzini for their quality standards, as well as because they have specific products to achieve the end results we were looking for. We have had a lot of positive feedback particularily about how the streets and spaces come alive at night-time. The artificial lighting transforms the shade structures with different colours and detail, and reinforces the different characters of the streets and spaces.”

Carina Hed-Pekola, lighting design and planning, Fidell, on how iGuzzini helped bring Sweden to the Expo

“Our choice came from the fact that iGuzzini have the quality and flexibility the project needed. I had a lot of help from my Swedish contact at iGuzzini; I am grateful for all the will and interest to resolve requests, as building a Swedish forest in the desert has its challenges. Early on, it was clear that lighting in the Pavilion needed to be able to mimic the light from all hours of the day, i.e.: both cold and warm tones as well as blue light for moonlight – and that it needed to come from the same luminaires. One of the major challenges for the exterior luminaires mounted at 18m height on tree trunks was to cope with the heat and to have the right density, i.e.: high IP rating sand. iGuzzini’s spotlight Palco InOut had just these abilities and fit perfectly.”

Enrique Peiniger, founder and chief innovator, OVI, on how iGuzzini contributed to the success of Al Wasl Plaza.

“The concept of creating an open plaza as the central iconic welcoming structure for the World Expo was a radical design approach that allows visitors to truly become part of an event and the space itself. In this realm, lighting has to do much more than gust illuminate, it has to establish the experience of human immersion within the dome. […] After a careful review of required lighting hardware criterial the selection of qualified manufacturers with proven project experience focused on a few relevant contenders. Ultimately, iGuzzini was selected for its significant variety of lighting hardware as well as on their technical performance, optical capabilities, along with the strong service support from iGuzzini’s international sales and technical on-site support teams. iGuzzini is an experienced partner who supported us and the design team from the beginning of our lighting concept, through to physical and technical coordination, all the way to delivery and installation with the local contractor teams”.
