Kalba Ice Factory
Culture
An ice warehouse transformed into an exhibition centre, as well as a restaurant and residential space. The lighting is tailored to the functions of the various areas.
The general idea was that all the lighting should be hidden: in the garden between the trees, where the Palco fixture installed in the poles, light through the leaves and create shadows in the floor; the tracks in the restaurant were hidden between the flap of the ceiling, so we see a soft light over the tables, but no fixtures. The terrace is lit with inground lights to see only the light touching the ceiling rather than the fixture itself. The main goal was to create a walk where visitors can admire the beautiful view without being disturbed by light. From far away visitors can admire a beautiful building almost floating in the mangroves.
Its unique natural location combined with the powerful presence of its original building makes it quite unique. It provides artists with a rich context and the possibility of integrating art and public space. In order to retain as much 'patina' as possible, all design-oriented decisions were aimed at leaving the factory ‘as is’ as much as possible.
