The principles of ergonomics form the basis of the criteria and solutions to be used for office lighting. Similarly to how furniture can be used to enhance the shape of the space, light plays an essential role in guaranteeing the comfort of workers and the quality of the work they produce. The ceiling is the preferred location for luminaires and their positioning depends on the size of the room and how the workstations are organised.
The main aim is to guarantee visual comfort with adequate light levels, balanced luminance and the absence of direct glare or glare reflected by the furniture or computer monitors. For office lighting, indoor ceiling-mounted luminaires and indoor recessed luminaires are most commonly used, with fluorescent lamps which have electronic ballasts. In the versions compatible with the DALI protocol, together with the light control systems, the light flow can be automatically regulated in the necessary quantity and programmed for the appropriate time schedules, further reducing energy consumption.
