The Palazzo dell'Emiciclo returned to the city of L'Aquila

Inaugurated by the President of Italian Republic

The now restored historic building, damaged by the 2009 earthquake, will be inaugurated by the President of the Italian Republic

The Palazzo dell'Emiciclo dell'Aquila, headquarters to the Regional Council of Abruzzo, will reopen officially on Friday, 22 June. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, scheduled at 4 pm, will take place in the presence of Italy’s President, Sergio Mattarella.

Severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake of L'Aquila, the monumental complex dating back to the seventeenth century had suffered serious damage to the colonnade and the nave of the church. The restoration work, started on 11 January 2016, was the first public reconstruction site undertaken in the historic centre of the capital city of the Abruzzo region and the first one to be returned to the local community with a new cultural significance. Reclaiming its status as the seat of the Regional Council of Abruzzo, the Palace now becomes a place of international research and learning, through the addition of the Gran Sasso Science Institute of Higher Education, along with a winter garden and a new library - created in the former basement of the structure. The use of seismic isolators during the renovation project has turned the structure into a model, at both national and European level, owing to the reconstruction practices used.

iGuzzini was actively involved in the project, having illuminated the external areas of the monumental complex as well as several internal spaces. The façade of the Emiciclo is illuminated using Light Up Earth, innovative luminaires that maximize energy efficiency and visual comfort, courtesy of the patented OptiBeam Reflector technology they incorporate. The warm colour temperature and the high colour rendering index (CRI 80) of the recessed luminaires contribute to enhancing the rich neoclassical colonnade made of white stone. Underscore InOut, Woody, Maxiwoody, Cestello, Linealuce, and Reflex – are the other luminaires used to illuminate these magnificent spaces.
